What is CAD Data?

What is CAD Data?

What is CAD Data? CAD data can encompass model geometry, derived geometry, metadata, and can extend to data generated from various forms of analysis. CAD data can be 2D or 3D, composed of wireframes, surfaces or solids, and represented by polygons or voxels. CAD data can contain underlying spline or analytical geometry, gaps between faces, and formats can be ASCII or binary. It can contain PMI and UDA data, and can output that data to sharable formats such as 3D PDF and WebGL for anyone to view in a 3D viewer. It can be extracted to XML and other formats for analysis to help designers and manufacturers improve products and processes.   2D CAD Data This...
Four Threats to Manufacturing On-Time and On-Budget

Four Threats to Manufacturing On-Time and On-Budget

Avoid Million-Dollar Manufacturing Disasters In engineering, something as simple as declaring the wrong unit of measure can create a disaster costing millions of dollars. John Pike, space policy director at the Federation of American Scientists, stated, “It is very difficult for me to imagine how such a fundamental, basic discrepancy could have remained in the system for so long,” regarding the English to Metric units mistake at NASA [1]. Watch the video overview. Article continues below. Four Threats to On-Time and On-Budget Engineering disasters can often be traced back to design errors that creep into downstream manufacturing processes through...
How to Destroy a Spacecraft in 7 Easy Steps

How to Destroy a Spacecraft in 7 Easy Steps

The purpose of How to Destroy a Spacecraft in 7 Easy Steps is to emphasize how easy it is to inadvertently make bad design and manufacturing decisions which can not only affect astronauts in the space program, but can extend to all sectors and endanger lives, products and companies. We honor the men and women who’ve given their lives to advance our space program. Many of us know the story of how the Apollo 13 spacecraft blew her oxygen tanks near the moon, nearly costing the lives of three astronauts, but through heroic acts and ingenuity, managed to limp home with all her crew intact. The incident nearly derailed the Apollo space program – but few of us know...

What’s in the SuperView Eval?

What’s in the SuperView eval? Many people think that the TransMagic Superview eval must be some kind of limited version of TransMagic, but the standard SuperView eval is exactly the same as the one our customers use; it’s just limited to 7 days of use. Overview In the SuperView eval you get all of the normal features of Superview, as well as two add-ons: MagicHeal and MagicCheck.   Superview CAD Viewing Open and view any major 3D CAD format, including CATIA V4, V5, V6, JT, NX, Creo, SOLIDWORKS, Solid Edge, Inventor, ACIS, Parasolid, SMS, STEP and IGES, as well as NGRAIN and numerous polygonal formats. How do you Compare CAD Models?

How do you Compare CAD Models?

The need to compare CAD models Imagine you are an estimator who works for a mold development company; a prospective customer sends you a CAD file and asks for a quote to have a mold made. You pull up the model on your CAD or viewing system, make a few measurements, and take your best guess at what it might cost to make a mold for this part. You send the quote to the prospect, and a few weeks later, they send you a revised part and ask for a new quote; they also communicate that the only change is the size of one hole. Your inclination is to do a quick visual check to verify there are no other changes, and quote a similar price to the prospect, since this is...
CAD Model Validation

CAD Model Validation

A Recent CAD Forum Discussion Reading various CAD forums can be illuminating. Here’s a paraphrase of a discussion on a recent CAD forum where a CAD engineer is looking for a way to test if the original CAD model has been changed in any way when translating from CATIA to STEP to SOLIDWORKS. So the question is, if CNC machining or other operations are going to be performed on models that were translated from the original, how do we know that those models are accurate? Let’s look at the question and some of the answers. Question We do aerospace design, and are sending a lot of models to subcontractors for CNC machining. During the CATIA to STEP...
