What is CAD Data?

What is CAD Data? CAD data can encompass model geometry, derived geometry, metadata, and can extend to data generated from various forms of analysis. CAD data can be 2D or 3D, composed of wireframes, surfaces or solids, and represented by polygons or voxels. CAD data can contain underlying spline or analytical geometry, gaps between faces, and formats can be ASCII or binary. It can contain PMI and UDA data, and can output that data to sharable formats such as 3D PDF and WebGL for anyone to view in a 3D viewer. It can be extracted to XML and other formats for analysis to help designers and manufacturers improve products and processes.   2D CAD Data This...

CAD Viewer

What 8 Tasks Should a CAD Viewer Perform? What should you look for in a CAD Viewer? First and foremost, it should read the files you need to view. But there are other things to consider; check out our list below. View Major CAD Formats. Easily Navigate Parts and Assemblies. View & Manage PMI. See Inside CAD Geometry. Create & Save Views. Dimension, Measure & Calculate. Interrogate Solids. Share the Data with Others.     View Major CAD Formats Being able to view more CAD formats gives you more flexibility in dealing with existing customers, and broadens your ability to pursue new customers. A good CAD viewer will let you: Read CATIA V4 Model,...

Four Threats to Manufacturing On-Time and On-Budget

Four Threats to Manufacturing On-Time and On-Budget

Avoid Million-Dollar Manufacturing Disasters Note: This blog post is a subset of a white paper entitled Avoiding Engineering Disasters which will be released soon, and contains more information as well as citations. We will post a link to the paper here soon. In engineering, something as simple as declaring the wrong unit of measure can create a disaster costing millions of dollars. John Pike, space policy director at the Federation of American Scientists, stated, “It is very difficult for me to imagine how such a fundamental, basic discrepancy could have remained in the system for so long,” regarding the English to Metric units mistake at NASA. CATIA File Converter

CATIA File Converter

A CATIA file converter can translate to and from CATIA CAD and polygonal formats. The majority of CATIA files you will encounter will be .CATPart, or part files, and .CATProduct, or assembly files, although there are three other formats you may run into. This article will deal with what those formats are, best practices to consider when reading or writing to a CATIA format, and how to get access to a CATIA file converter.  CATIA Formats .Model – The .model extension is used for CATIA V4 parts and assemblies. Having the same name for parts and assemblies can create some confusion until the file is actually opened. .CATPart – A CATPart file is a part file or...
